Choosing a packaging manufacturer has a significant impact on the quality of the final product, production costs and the development potential of a brand. However, not every manufacturer specializes in the same type of packaging. Before starting a partnership, it is worth understanding the most common production models and how they differ from one another.

Two Main Types of Packaging Manufacturers

There are two primary types of packaging manufacturers on the market.

The first group consists of companies specializing in very large production volumes. The second group focuses on premium packaging, where quality, appearance and finishing effects play a major role.

Both models have their advantages and are aimed at different types of customers.

Large-Scale Production

Manufacturers focused on very high production volumes typically serve brands selling mass-market products. This includes industries such as food, household chemicals, everyday consumer goods and private-label products for retail chains.

In such projects, the key priorities are:

  • high production efficiency
  • low unit cost
  • the ability to fulfill multi-million-unit orders
  • production consistency

Production runs can reach tens or even hundreds of millions of units for a single order.

With this type of packaging, appearance and advanced finishing techniques often become secondary. The main goal is to ensure adequate quality while maintaining a competitive price.

This model works particularly well when packaging primarily serves a protective and informational function.

Premium Packaging Production

The second group consists of manufacturers specializing in premium packaging.

In this case, not only functionality matters, but also appearance, build quality and the customer's overall experience with the product.

Such packaging is commonly used in industries such as:

  • cosmetics
  • dietary supplements
  • scented candles
  • perfumes
  • gift products
  • luxury goods
  • confectionery

Customers in these sectors pay close attention to details such as:

  • cardboard quality and grammage
  • manufacturing precision
  • embossing and hot stamping
  • digital embellishments
  • coatings and laminations
  • inserts and product stabilization elements

Production runs are usually smaller than in mass production, and unit costs are higher, but quality requirements are significantly more demanding.

Minimum Order Quantities

One of the most important aspects when choosing a manufacturer is the minimum order quantity.

Some manufacturers only handle very large production runs because their production lines have been optimized for high volumes. Starting and ending production involves substantial waste - before a printing press reaches acceptable color consistency, dozens or sometimes even hundreds of cardboard sheets may be discarded. Manufacturers specializing in smaller premium runs often use digital printing equipment, which significantly reduces this waste for small and medium-sized orders.

For smaller brands or companies launching a new product, this can become a challenge.

It is worth checking:

  • what the minimum order quantity is
  • whether the manufacturer handles small and medium-sized orders
  • whether it is possible to order a single mockup or test package

Not every manufacturer is equipped to handle short production runs of several hundred or several thousand units.

Mockups and Prototypes Before Production

Another important consideration is the ability to create a packaging prototype before launching full production.

Such a mockup allows you to evaluate:

  • the packaging construction
  • material quality
  • print appearance
  • the functionality of closures and inserts
  • the overall perception of the product

This is particularly important for new projects and packaging that requires custom solutions.

It is worth remembering that not every manufacturer offers single prototype production. In large manufacturing facilities, such a service is often unavailable or involves additional costs.

Summary

There is no single packaging manufacturer that is the best choice for every project.

Companies producing multi-million-unit runs are ideal for mass-market products, where efficiency and production costs are the key priorities.

Premium packaging manufacturers focus on quality, appearance and customization possibilities.

Before making a decision, it is worth paying attention to:

  • the manufacturer's specialization
  • minimum order quantities
  • prototype availability
  • available technologies
  • range of finishing options
  • experience within a specific industry

This makes it easier to find a partner whose capabilities match the requirements of a particular product and brand.
